ENT & Allergy Associates Recognizes Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month
Each year, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Month highlights a group of cancers that greatly impact lives worldwide, including here in Wisconsin. At ENT & Allergy Associates, we believe awareness is key to prevention, early detection and effective treatment. Here’s what you need to know.
What are Head & Neck Cancers?
Head and neck cancers usually begin in the thin cells lining areas like the mouth, throat, voice box and sinuses. Cancers of the brain, eye, esophagus, thyroid gland and skin of the head and neck are not usually classified as head and neck cancers.
How Common are Head & Neck Cancers?
These cancers make up about 4% of all cancers in the U.S., with approximately 68,000 cases diagnosed annually. According to the National Library of Medicine, men are more than twice as likely as women to develop them, with most cases occurring after age 50.
Risk Factors for Head & Neck Cancer
Certain factors significantly increase the risk, including:
- Tobacco and alcohol use: These leading risk factors include exposure to secondhand smoke and chewing tobacco.
- HPV infection: HPV, especially type 16, is linked to many oropharyngeal cancers.
- Occupational and environmental exposures: Substances like wood dust, asbestos and synthetic fibers can raise risks.
- Radiation exposure and epstein-barr virus (EBV) are also linked to some types of head & neck cancers.
Common Symptoms
While these symptoms can point to less serious issues, consult an ENT professional if they persist.
- Persistent lump or sore that doesn’t heal on the head/neck
- Difficulty swallowing
- Hoarseness or voice changes
- Persistent sore throat
- Unexplained mouth bleeding
- Chronic sinus infections or nosebleeds
- Facial numbness or pain
Prevention and Early Detection
Reduce your risk by:
- Quitting smoking and cutting back on alcohol
- Getting vaccinated against HPV
- Using proper protection in work environments with harmful exposures
Routine dental exams and ENT check-ups are vital for early detection, improving treatment success rates.
Treatment and Support Options
Treatment plans may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or newer options like targeted therapy and immunotherapy. Rehabilitation, including speech therapy, dietary counseling and emotional support, is essential for recovery.
At ENT & Allergy Associates, we provide personalized care for patients at every stage, from diagnosis to recovery.
