About Allergy & Asthma

Anywhere from 40 to 50 million people in the U.S. have allergies or asthma. These diseases are so common that it might seem like the diagnosis and treatment are straightforward and that any doctor should be able to administer the most effective therapies. However, allergists are experts in their field with specialized training that allows them to:

  • Perform allergy testing
  • Identify the source of your suffering
  • Accurately diagnose your condition
  • Treat more than just your symptoms
  • Develop a personalized plan that eliminates your symptoms

Seeking the help of an allergist to test for and diagnose your allergies can help you feel much better.

Comprehensive Allergy & Immunological Care

Testing, Diagnosis & Treatment

Adults and children of any age can be tested for allergies. As soon as your first consultation, you can get tested. Once the results are in and the diagnosis is done, your allergist can sit down with you and tell you what you’re allergic to and, even better, what you can do about it.

Tests can be done for common allergens such as plant pollens, molds, dust mites, animal dander, insect stings, and various foods such as peanuts, eggs, wheat, shellfish, and milk. Testing also is available for some medicines, such as penicillin.

  • Allergic Rhinitis (Hayfever)
  • Asthma, Drug Allergy
  • Hives, Recurrent Infections
  • Sinusitis
  • Food Allergy
  • Insect Allergy
  • Eczema
  • Injections (Allergy)

Allergy Shots

Allergy shots are the most commonly used and most effective form of allergy immunotherapy.

They are indicated for the treatment of allergic conditions affecting the nose and eyes (allergic rhino-conjunctivitis), ears (allergic otitis media), lungs (bronchial asthma) as well as for severe insect sting allergy. Shots are effective in treating reactions to many allergens, including trees, grass, weeds, mold, house dust, animal dander, and insect stings.

An extract of a small amount of the allergen is injected into the skin of the arm. An injection may be given once a week (sometimes more often) for about seven months, after which injections can be administered every two weeks. Eventually, injections can be given every four weeks. The duration of therapy may be three to five years, sometimes longer.

If you frequently experience shortness of breath or you hear a whistling or wheezy sound in your chest when you breathe, you may have asthma – a chronic condition that causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways in the lungs. Symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness.

There are two types of asthma:

Allergic: This type is triggered by exposure to an allergen, such as mold or pet dander.

Non-allergic: This is brought on by factors such as stress, exercise, illness, extreme weather, irritants in the air and certain medications.

As a chronic condition, asthma is something you’ll have to manage regularly. But the good news is you don’t have to face it alone.

How We Treat Asthma & Allergy

There are many different types of asthma, brought on by many different triggers. Understanding what type of asthma you have can result in better treatment and quality of life.

An allergist can determine if you have asthma through a series of tests. If you are diagnosed with asthma, your allergist will work with you to determine the best course of treatment, so you can manage your chronic condition.

Although there’s no cure for asthma, with the guidance of your allergist and a customized asthma treatment plan, you can manage this chronic condition and enjoy a full and active life.
